Curly Girl Designs Cards

We love this line of cards. They are witty ... poignant ... and just plain cute! It's our best selling line. Even more because of the pains that Curly Girl takes to protect the environment and keep the worl in America. These cards are "printed on recycled paper with soy-based ink with wind-power" in Massachusetts. Go Girls!

The card line covers just about every situation, occasion and whim. The images are frame-able. The messages make for great conversation. We find that they express thoughts we have but never put into words.

We just got in our Holiday cards. Six designs sold individually ($3.95 each) or in boxes of eight cards ($14.95 per box). These are not your average Holiday greetings. Be unique. Be adventurous. Be different. Get them while you can.

Decorate with Reclaimed, Repurposed Barnwood and Tin

These pieces of folk art are made in the little town of Chamblee, Georgia, using salvaged bead board and antique ceiling tin, with a few vintage doo-dads added to complete the image. They are decorative and unique, good for the environment because they use reclaimed materials, good for the economy since they are made in the USA and are good for you because they will warm your heart with a smile.

The artist explains:
We have been committed to using salvaged materials from the beginning for several reasons. But mostly because, why would you buy some new wood and work for hours to try and create this same old world charm with paint layers and sanding? It's a wonderful way to repurpose salvaged wood and tin.

Celtic Cross, Heart and Fleur d'Lys. ($115.00 each)
Old reclaimed barn wood is covered in vintage tin ceiling tiles to create these unique decorative accents.

Junk Hearts ($59.95 each)
What Valentine wouldn't love these hearts? Created from old bead board and vintage hardware, these hearts come in assorted colors.

Corrugated Tin Frames 5x7 ($39.95 each)

Painted Tin Frames ($59.95 each)

Picture frames made from salvaged materials, like reclaimed wood, antique bead board, used molding, ceiling tin and barn roofs create rustic, down-home places for your family memories. These eco-friendly offerings may not fit into the palette of some decorators, but they will easily fit into your home.

Hanging Angel ($119.00 each)

Standing Angel ($165.00 each)

These angels are made by layering antique wood to form the robes and then attaching wings that are antique ceiling tin. The patina on the reclaimed wood and antique tin is beautiful and each one is unique. These are great for the holidays, of course, but we like to have them around all year long.

Linoleum Block Prints by Shirlie Montgomery

Shirlie Montgomery (1918-2012) was a local San Jose resident ... born and raised right here in the Valley of Hearts Delight. Ms. Montgomery was a well-known San Francisco Bay Area photo-journalist. In fact she was the first such in the Bay Area. She was also a graphic artist, illustrating her photo albums, keeping sketchbooks and making block prints from wood and linoleum.

These are original linoleum printing blocks created by Shirlie  circa 1940. One is a bookplate with a candle and books; the other an Arts & Crafts inspired tree. Included with the block are sheets of artist proofs and a couple of original sketches.

These are available in the shop and online for $49.00 for each set.

Renga Arts in Sebastopol

Driving down Sonoma's Gravenstein Highway south of Sebastopol the other day we spotted some bizarre and fascinating art surrounding this art shop. We just had to stop. There were space ships and trains, trucks carrying pigs and a VW bus driven by a strange couple. Around the garden were an eclectic mix of characters, animals and things!

How about a backyard party?
Conducter Patrick?
We recognized the reclaimed art sculptures as the work of Patrick Amiot and Brigitte Laurent, Sebastopol urban artists that we profiled a few years ago. Their junk art and wall reliefs are a collaborative effort of ideas and talents, jointly conceived, jointly created. Patrick sculpts and Brigitte paints.

This doesn't look like Buster Posey ... does it?
Remnants to arts
Looks like a confrontation is going to happen!
Farmer John and whoo else?
I think someone needs to kiss this frog.

Hippies!

Back in 2010 we saw their art posted on lawns, standing in fields and parked in front of local businesses. Their art is now also on display at Renga Arts, along with the creations of owner Josef Suecs and a trove of other local artists. The shop's website explains:

Renga Arts produces and sells art, both fine and functional, made from reclaimed, salvaged, and recycled materials. We have joined reknowned folk artist, Patrick Amiot, to create a showcase for exemplary works from the finest artists and craftspeople working with salvaged materials.

Much of our line capitalizes on the inherent glory of used, and abused, surfaces and materials. Each has a history, a story, a past -- and at best, an intimation of soul. Other works are made of new materials, though constructed in such a way to hasten the process of positive decay.
A look out back.
Maybe this is a bit sacriligious, but it makes a statement!

The Amiot/Laurent art dominates the yard and sculpture garden. Inside are smaller objects including pianobots and vinyl record birds and ants by Suecs, nifty glass vases from Cee Glass ... or are they ink wells ... or maybe pencil holders ... they are what you want them to be, and eddy heads by 3D Edddy. There are dozens of other artists offering notes and cards, bags and purses, jewelry and whimsies.

The website also offers a look at a wonderful 1970s Collage Scrapbook filled with greeting cards, newspaper and magazine clippings and cartoons, jewelry catalogs, wildlife pictures, television show ads, children's books, and other everyday images.
